Bento # 3 28-03-2008

Well onto day 3. I really thought I would have done the first one, and then failed miserably with following through, but I am really enjoying making these special little meals for my little squirt.
Yesterdays the box came home reasonable EMPTY yay! Just a spoonfull of pasta salad and some carrot sticks left!
I dreamt about bento the night before, yes, seriously, I had the worst sleep ever! And in the end, I didnt even make half the things that I planned on doing.

Fridays bento is pretty :)
PINK RICE woo, just a splash of red colour and presto :)
Some cheerios (skin off for the princess) chopped.
Cooked broccoli pieces.
The usual carrot peas and baby corn that she is slooowly starting to try a little more of.
And to finish, some pocket bread wedges, cute as! (Meanwhile, what once was a circle, is now a puzzle of bread pieces in our fridge!)
I think this one will go down well, there was much excitement, (and help) with the rice. She was a little worried about the pocket bread, but new things are scary. Will know by 3pm!

Bento #2 27-03-2008

So I spent the day at work, working really hard, sorta... more looking at the amazing things mums manage to create every morning for their little terrors/angels.
I prefer to hit snooze x 3 in the morning, so squirts will get put together of an evening at the moment.
Woo, I found some cookie cutters, sweet! Stars are good :)

Round 2 consists of:
Staaaar sandwiches x 2, ham and tomato like yesterday.
Carrot sticks, baby corn flowers (under carrot, just cut into rounds) and peas.
Pasta salad on lettuce mix leaves.
Cheese snack bickies in a paper cup, to keep from sandwich.

I think this one is cuter. We will have to see how she goes with it tomorrow, and will update on the verdict!

Numero Uno (Bento #1) 26-03-2008

Ok, so lets give this a whirl.... whats the worst that could happen?
I had no idea where to start, and the weekends shopping trip didnt really fill the fridge/pantry with ample idea starters!
The squirt loves sandwiches, so we will start her off slowly, and gently. Lol.
A big circle sandwich will look sweet, better than that boring square rubbish :)

So here we have
3 bread layered sandwich* (kinda like a Big mac, but not!) with ham and tomato, tomato between ham, to keep bread fresher.
*note the ham catterpillar atop, cute huh?!
Baby corn cobs and star shaped raw carrot.
Alphabet gluten free pasta on lettuce for colour, with some mini pea/carrot skewers.
Needs more colour, next time, next time...

Result:
Sandwich gone
Carrot gone
Everything else remains. Squirt claims she doesnt like the noodles (fair enough, I dont like cold past either!) and after loving corn last night, doesnt love it today.

In the beginning...

Last week a friend at work introduced me to bento.
What a neat idea. Without sticking completely to the traditional style of bento by having pickled foods and meats all the time, this was the perfect oppurtunity to introduce new styles of, and flavours of food to by 4y.o's lunchbox.

After a little bit of research I came across heaps of sites and blogs that other mums all over the world have. My favourites coming from Bento-corner and Lunch in a box...

A trip to the local supermarket, and I picked up a simple divided container, for $1.98... so hey, if she isnt keen, no loss! A couple of stickers that I had hidden away, and its preschool heaven :) + Im a pretty cool mum in her eyes when Dora is whipped out... and the stickers were free from bookclub!

I am now just a little hooked... a visit to eBay and I now have on the way, a traditionl double layered bento box (pink of course!) some bento grass dividers, some rice moulds (hearts and stars) vege cutters and some little animal picks. All of which I will share once arrived.
